Hebrews 12: 1: “Therefore since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”

Giselle's Devotional, by Giselle.

What a joy to know that even if I do not see these witnesses surrounding me, by faith I know they are, because the Word of God tells me they are. Because of this Heavenly supervision we are encouraged to lay aside everything that could possibly hinder our walk in the Lord.

In verses 22 – 24: the writer describes who these witnesses consist of;  “ But you have come to Mount Zion and to the City of the Living God, the Heavenly Jerusalem, and to Myriads of angels, to the general assembly and the Church of the first-born who are enrolled in Heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of  righteous men made perfect, and to Jesus, the Mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled Blood, which speaks better than the Blood of Abel.”

What an awesome thought and responsibility to know that these weigh and analyze everything I do. This very thought can change anyone’s perspective on life. It reminds me of spectators watching every move of their favorite sports player, to see how she or he performs. Imagine the fan club because of our love for Jesus, but imagine also the disappointment when some of us lag behind in our commitment, or get entangled in other matters not in keeping with the Kingdom of God.

This is why we are to pray for and encourage one another because we cannot assume that everyone is where they should be in the Lord, especially with all the deceptions of this media-frenzied age. In Colossians 1: 9 – 10: we read, “For this reason also, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His Will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”

In 2 Thessalonians 1: 10 – 11: we read, “When He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed…for our testimony to you was believed. To this end we also pray for you always that God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work with Power; in order that the Name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Dearest Holy Lord Jesus: what an awesome reality to think that I have witnesses watching me on my way to Heaven. May this fact alone make us demand more of our self. Come by Your Holy Spirit, to enable us to scrutinize ourselves in a greater way today, that we might be the best that we can possibly be; in order that You might be greatly glorified in and through us. Glory to You alone!
