Psalms 1: 3: “And he will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.”

Giselle's Devotional, by Giselle.

The heading of this Psalm is called, “The Righteous and the wicked contrasted.” It is a great Psalm to give us very clear insight as to whom “the Lord” attributes right standing, or not. It goes without saying that the Lord, through His Word, has always made an absolute distinction and separation between the two.

Verses 1 – 3: say clearly, “How blessed (Happy, fortunate, prosperous, and enviable) is the man who walks and lives not after the counsel of the ungodly (following their advice, their plans and purposes) nor stands (submissive and inactive) in the path of sinners, nor sits down (to relax and rest) where the scornful (and the mockers) gather. But his delight and desire are in the Law of the Lord, and on His Law (instructions and teachings of God) he habitually meditates (ponders and studies) by day and night.

In verses 4 – 6: it specifically says, “The wicked are not so, but they are like chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. Here we see inevitable consequences to those who choose to walk after the counsel of their own ways. They will not be part of the blessings bestowed upon those who seek refuge in, and who are obedient to, God.

Here are just some of the of examples of Scriptures that give us further meaning to the contrast mentioned above, and what it is that the wicked do, in order to be identified as such.  1 Samuel 13: 24a: says simply, “As the Proverb of the Ancients says, “Out of the wicked comes forth wickedness (evil, profoundly immoral or wrong, to bring about harmful, painful, or very unpleasant events). Psalm 10: 2a – 4 + 7 – 8b: says, “In pride (and arrogance) the wicked hotly pursue (and persecute) the righteous: For the wicked boast of his heart’s desire, and the greedy (for gain) man curses and spurns (renounces and despises) the Lord. The wicked in the haughtiness (pride) of his countenance does not seek (will not seek, inquire for, and yearn for) Him (God); all his thought are, “there is no God” (so He never punishes). His mouth is full of curses and deceit and oppression; under his tongue is mischief and wickedness…he kills the innocent).

Jesus tells us in John 5: 24: says, “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My Word, and believes Him Who sent Me, has Eternal Life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.” 1 John 5: 11 – 12: says, “And the witness is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. And he who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the Life.

2 Timothy 2: 15 + 19: says, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, handling accurately the Word of Truth. Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, “The Lord knows those who are His,” and “Let everyone who names the Name of the Lord abstain from wickedness.”

Dearest Holy Lord Jesus: thank you so much for this fearful Word which we read in today’s Scriptures. Come by Your Holy Spirit, and instill within us a renewed Fear and respect for God that we may shun away from all that could possibly be displeasing to you. Come and probe our hearts that we may be enlightened to our daily need for the infilling of Your Precious Holy Spirit, for by Your Grace are we saved, and not of our own making, it is the gift of God. Glory to You alone!
