I had the high honor of leading in praise again a short time back at our weekly Bible Study, which includes among us several “old guards” of the Church. Toward the end of our time of singing, I distinctly felt today’s verse above well up within my spirit, and enveloping my mind. It is still such a valid Word for today, and one that should take precedent over the direction of our entire lives.
Jesus tells us in John 6: 63: “It is the Spirit Who gives life (He is the Life Giver); the flesh profits nothing (conveys no benefit whatsoever); the Words (Truths) that I have spoken to you are Spirit and are Life.” The Lord in this verse re-emphasizes the importance of the Holy Spirit quickening us with new life, and bringing to us the spiritual Word of Life.
Ephesians 6: 17: says, “And take up the Helmet of Salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.” Here we see another dimension of the Work of the Holy Spirit, as the Word of God becomes His sword, which we are commanded to use for victory in our daily walk. As we speak the Word in faith, the Holy Spirit literally uses it as a sword of defense.
There are several key Scriptures through the Bible that show us the absolute value and importance which God places upon His Word; here are just some of them. Psalm 119: 89: says, “Forever, O Lord, Thy Word is ever settled in Heaven.” What God has spoken will never be undone. And this is what Jesus came to relate to us, when He said in John 17: 8, and Matthew 24: 35: “for the Words which Thou (Father God) gavest Me I have given to them (the apostles); and they received them, and truly understood that I came forth from Thee, and they believed that Thou didst send Me.” “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.”
Jeremiah 1: 12: says, “Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over My Word to perform it.” Here we see the Lord giving us the assurance that He watches over His Word to perform it on behalf of us who place our trust in Him. It is the Word spoken to Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20: 15b: “the battle is not yours but God’s.”
Hebrews 4: 12: says it all, “For the Word of God (that God speaks) is living and active (alive and full of power making it active and operative, energizing and effective); and sharper than any two edged Sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul (breath of life) and (immortal) spirit, of both joints and marrow (of the deepest part of our nature), and able to judge (exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging) the thoughts and intentions (purposes) of the heart.”
Dearest Holy Lord Jesus: thank You so very much for these powerful words of truth, which cause us to humbly submit to complete dependence upon Your care for us. Come by Your Holy Spirit, and forgive us for all the times we have taken the reigns of our lives away from Your Lordship. Fill us anew with Your Grace and mercy to rely completely on Your Holy Spirit, Your Word, and Your absolute faithfulness to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. All Glory to you alone!
