This verse is spoken to us by Jesus, and would not be complete unless we understood who He was speaking to, and what Mary was doing that was the only thing that mattered in His desire for all. Verses 38 – 41: tell us, \u201cNow as they were traveling along, He (Jesus) entered a certain village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. And she had a sister called Mary, who moreover was listening to the Lord\u2019s Word, seated at His feet. But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came to Jesus and said, \u201cLord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.\u201d But the Lord answered and said to her, \u201cMartha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things;\u201d We see that Mary, in listening and sitting at Jesus\u2019 Feet had chosen the Lord as her portion in life. She had made Him a priority over the hustle and bustle of everyday care. It is easy for someone, who like Mary, loves to take prolonged times into the Lord\u2019s Presence and in His Word, to also be quite like Martha when duty calls, as one is literally thrown into the thick of their responsibilities in life.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus invites us in Matthew 11: 28 – 30: saying, \u201cCome to Me, all you who are weary and heavy-laden (and overburdened), and I will give you rest (I will ease and relieve and refresh your soul). Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart; and you shall find rest (relief, refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls. For My Yoke is easy (wholesome, useful, good- not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious and pleasant) and My burden light (and easy to be borne).\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Matthew 6: 33 – 34: says \u201cBut seek first (aim and strive after) first of all His Kingdom and His Righteousness (His way of doing and being right); and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.\u201d Ephesians 5: 9 – 10: \u201cFor the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth, trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dearest Holy Lord Jesus: thank You so much for the gift of freedom which we have to take time in Thy Presence and in Thy Word. Come by Your Holy Spirit, and refresh us anew from the cares of the world, that they may be a means to our well-being, and not a distraction taking us away from our position in You. Enable us to bring You into every moment of our days, whether we are shut-ins alone, or in the midst of the tumults of the working-place.
